What do we tow behind the coach?
That green "toad" back there is a 1974 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ-40. We've been pulling it for about three years now.
I know--those of you who are familiar with Land Cruisers know that they are not designed to be flat towed. Those of you who are not familiar with Land Cruisers might think, wait a minute...it is just another four-wheel drive; put the transfer case in neutral and go, right?
Nope. The thing is, there’s no oil being slung on the output shaft when it’s spinning without the rest of the gears. It'll eventually mess up the transfer case, especially if you have that crazy problem where, when the seal between the transmission and the transfer case starts to go, the oil from the transfer case gets pumped into the transmission and runs the transfer case dry (by the way, I put in an equalizer hose connecting the two fill ports like you can get from Man-A-Fre when this first started happening, but I've recently rebuilt the transfer case). But that doesn't mean you can't tow it.
How to tow it then? Transfer case in gear and the transmission in neutral (or you could disconnect the drive shaft.)
